If you have always wondered what it would be like to be a vegan, or what home-made vegan food might be like, or if environmental protection is an important topic for you, or if you want to do something against the exploitation of animals, you should take a look at the Veganuary challenge

While in the early 2000s it was considered strange if someone announced that they no longer eat meat, by 2022 it will no longer be worth shrugging if someone turns out to be a vegetarian. Since then, we are no longer surprised if someone has special dietary needs: more and more people are starting special diets, even due to food allergies developed in adulthood, and veganism is also widespread.

But veganism is not just a decision related to nutrition. There is also an ethical philosophy associated with it, because vegans refuse to consume animal products - not only limited to food - because they oppose turning sentient animals into commodities. The popularity of veganism may have been further enhanced by the fact that a few years ago, research was carried out on the fact that a plant-based diet is better for the ecosystem of our planet.

Vegan Challenge

The term Vegan January was born from the combination of the words "vegan" and "January". Its goal is that as many people as possible can try the vegan lifestyle for a month. For the third year in a row, the free Veganuár challenge is being held in Hungary, which is a free non-profit initiative, within the framework of which the challengers receive daily e-mails with useful information and advice regarding a vegan lifestyle change: among other things, easy-to-prepare vegan recipes and practical guides.

A total of 38,000 people took part in the 2020 and 2021 Veganuary challenge, and this year, 13,616 interested people signed up for the challenge before the first of January. Several celebrities support the initiative with their names: Kristóf Steiner, Peti Puskás-Dallos, Gábor Karalyos and Éva Antal, the "Vászonzsákoslány" encouraged their followers to the Veganuár challenge.

Why do people go vegan?

Among the participants of the 2021 Veganuary challenge, 2,334 people filled out the anonymous questionnaire, which asked about their experiences and motivations. It turned out that most people started exploring the vegan lifestyle because of the development of a he althier diet. Also, many people have decided to try veganism in order to protect animals and to save the Earth's ecosystem.

More than half of the respondents experienced positive he alth changes days or weeks after trying veganism. More energy, better digestion, better skin, reduced joint pain, lower cholesterol levels, easier weight loss, more restful sleep and improved well-being were reported most often.
